First School

During the years 1895 and 1925, many small schools, with only one or two teachers, were established in Schleicher County. Travel was difficult during this era, and most of the schools were built near large ranches.

One of these small single room schools was Bailey Ranch School, created by an order of the Commissioners Court, June 12, 1907. It was a large structure that served as a Church as well as the school. It was named in honor of Bob Bailey, who originally owned the ranch on which it was built.

The first teacher of the Bailey Ranch School was Susie Gibson. Other teachers were Pearl Bailey, Clarence Womack, Ellen Stroud, Tom Murry, Rosa Canova Maggie Hogan and Lodice Putman.

The land, where the first structure was built, was donated by Frank Spencer. It was located three miles south and six miles west of Eldorado. The people of Bailey Ranch Community built the one room building.
