Copper Mining Road

This picture, taken in September 1939, is of a copper mining road between Ducktown and Copperhill, Tennessee. The fumes from the sulfuric acid and the copper smelting have destroyed all the vegetation and, as you can see, eroded the land. During the 1930's through the 40's not much was known about what the effects from a mining site, if not properly taken care of, would have on the surrounding areas. Luckily, today we have learned from the mistakes of those before us and situations like this have been able to be avoided.
