West Virginia was admitted to statehood on June 20, 1863. West Virginia is the only state in the Union to have acquired its sovereignty by proclamation of the President of the United States. Charleston is the capitol of West Virginia. The cardinal is the state bird of West Virginia. Rhododendron is the state's flower and the Sugar Maple is the state's tree. The state song of West Virginia is "West Virginia, My Home." The nickname for West Virginia is The Mountain State and the motto is "Mountaineers are always free".
