Chopping Cotton

This is a photo of African American workers chopping cotton on rented land, near White Plains, Green County, Georgia. The picture was taken in June of 1941 when the temperature was hot, and the sun was beating down on the workers. As you can see, the women had to work in their dresses and the men worked in long sleeve shirts with overalls. The women are working bare foot because it was probably a lot easier to work that way.
