Maine Capital Building

Maine, abbreviated ME, became this 23rd state on March 15, 1820. The state is commonly called the Pine Tree State. Maine’s state song is the “State of Maine Song” written by Roger Vinton Snow. Maine has a bold state motto of Dirgo, meaning “I lead”. The official state animal is the moose, and the state fish is the Landlocked Salmon.  Maine’s capital is Augusta, and its largest city is Portland. The state has sixteen counties and occupies 33,215 square miles. Other symbols that represent Maine are the Tourmaline gemstone and the White pine tree. Maine’s population is 1.2 million people.
