Maryland, abbreviated MD, became a state on April 28, 1788 and was the seventh of the original thirteen colonies. The state is famous for the Chesapeake Bay retriever, the state dog,  and the state bird, the Baltimore Oriole. The state’s sport of choice is Lacrosse. The state song is “Maryland! My Maryland!” by James Ryder Randall. Maryland's capital is Annapolis.
